German convicted over baby deaths

I am not sure what I find more disturbing about this article, the fact that someone would be so morally bankrupt as to do something like this, or the fact that in Germany this is only worth 15 years. At least they are consistent. After all, this is the same country that initially put a cannibal away for only eight years because the victim "wanted to die". Meiwes eventually got the sentence he deserved (well, considering Germany doesn't have the death penalty). I have less hope for this case. After all, had she done this before the baby was actually born, the murders would have been perfectly legal...

Update: The article has been expanded since the "Breaking News" article this morning. Now I have even more questions and comments.
A jobless dental assistant, Mrs Hilschenz did not give evidence at her trial but had previously told investigators she did not harm the babies, but let them die after giving birth alone.
Excuse me? Last time I checked, letting your babies die is harming them. This is one screwed up world if someone can say they didn't harm their baby but just let it die. What the hell is wrong with these people?
She said she already had three children, and her husband did not want any more babies.
Ever heard of birth control? Condoms usually work. Vasectomies work. Should have probably looked into that a bit, eh?
Mrs Hilschenz's husband, relatives and neighbours all said they had been unaware of her pregnancies.
Really? Are they stupid? Blind? Look at the picture. She isn't fat or anything. You would think hiding a pregnancy would be very, very difficult.

My God Stuffle. Yes. Moral bankruptcy devalues life. These are the disgusting consequences. Ick! This was a sad post, but it is necessary to see the nastiness if we are to combat it! Good rant;) Have a good weekend too:)

Although I'm pro-life, it's reasons like this that I believe abortion should be legal. I know it's a slippery slope, but I know that the babies would have been better off going straight to our maker quickly rather than this way. It's all too bizarre. You're right, didn't anyone notice her pregnancies and why there were never any babies around afterwards? This is just sick.

I believe abortion is legal in Germany, but that didn't help matters at all here...

If anything, abortion being legal makes it easier for these people to justify their sick actions. After all, if you can kill a baby before it is born, it isn't much of a jump to make to killing it immediately after birth.

Has the murder and crime rates increased or decreased since aborition/killing was made legal?

Both. They were on the rise, but have fallen within the last 5-10 years or so. I think the reasons for this are varried, though at least one study attempts to link recently falling crime rates to the idea that a large numger of potential criminals have been aborted. The idea is certainly interesting, but I think the real reasons for crime rate fluctuations have to do with many social factors, including drugs, how closely the "little things" are enforced (the idea being that if cops don't let the little things slide, crime does not escellate to the big things), etc. I think those things have a bigger effect than abortion on the general crime rate.

OTOH, I do think abortion has an effect on how some people will justify crimes like this against infants...
